Time and again we hear about transformational projects that run over on time and budget. In fact, Gartner reports that through 2019, more than 50 percent of such projects are expected to exceed their initial estimated cost or result in business disruption due to flawed execution.

Over the past year I’ve learned that many enterprise cloud migration projects are planned and measured using static and inaccurate information – most notably, Excel spreadsheets. I have seen very smart people toiling over massive spreadsheets too many times, trying to map on-premise operating system instances to optimal cloud instance types, determine server refresh options and figuring out what can and cannot be moved for various reasons.

All of which invariably leads me to ask a simple question: Why do it that way — why not let machines do the work for you? The data required to make the decisions is directly available from the points of provisioning, and a catalog of transformational options is accessible via APIs from providers like Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Intel. Historical performance data is also available — it just needs to be stitched together. What’s missing was an algorithm that could make the match between what is currently being used and what could (and should) be used in the future for optimal performance and cost effectiveness. In short, a matchmaker for enterprise compute. Or as we like to call it, TSO Match — our new solution for excel jockeys who want a better, faster, and more accurate way to deliver on the promise of IT transformation.

A bit of background on TSO Match: Its foundation is built on our in-depth understanding of enterprise compute workload patterns and our ability to discover them – directly and via ecosystems partners such as Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. From there we created powerful algorithms that normalize the current state of compute in a way that allows us to compare it and find the best match within myriad cloud catalogs. We do this using multiple heuristics and pattern matching to provide real-time algorithmic brokering between instance types, operating systems, network, and storage running both on premise and in the cloud. We then validated the approach with Amazon, Microsoft, and Intel to make sure we were making the best decisions based on the utilization patterns we identified.

So, for instance: Want to see what the best instances types and cost would be for running a benchmarked workload at AWS? Just press a button. Want to create cloud formation templates for those instance types to be auto provisioned? Press another button. Want to run an analysis for a client (or your boss) on migrating between on premise and cloud or between cloud providers or even regions? You guessed it — just hit the button again! The algorithm can process thousands of instances per second, so you’ll never wait long for an accurate answer. The scenarios and outcomes can be tweaked and rerun as many times as needed because it only takes seconds.
